Please try again later. Verified Purchase. One of the weaker Arkham villain collections so far. Man-Bat isn't one of my favorite Batman villains as it is, but when used correctly he can have intriguing stories. The problem with this collection is that almost all of the included stories and issues are ones that touch upon Man-Bat's origins. While this worked wonders for the Poison Ivy and Two-Face collections since their origins have changed and altered over the years , Man-Bat's origin story is mostly the same throughout the various issues: Professor Langstrom experiments with a bat gland formula, takes it himself, becomes Man-Bat, runs afoul of Batman, has drama with his wife Francine.
There isn't a whole lot of variation to the different takes aside from playing with whether or not Langstrom and his wife had a happy marriage or not.
Other than the continually repeating origin stories there isn't much to this collection. There's a funny couple of issues from a Man-Bat solo series where Langstrom tried to play hero for awhile featuring some hysterical Z-List DC villains I'd forgotten even existed , a good New era one shot that takes place during the Forever Evil story arc, and a beautifully illustrated Batman Black and White issue.
Other than that though the issues are mostly too samey. The one longer story arc included here that explores Langstrom losing his mind to the serum and the revelation that his wife has had a Man-Bat baby is pretty well written but the art is atrocious in my opinion. The character models are ugly and too bulky and the action panels are overly messy. Brett L. Top Contributor: Batman. I had a feeling I'd be fifty fifty on this collection being an old fogey and preferring pre Knighfall-era stories, but a fine collection nonetheless.
Grandson Approved! One person found this helpful. Although I don't fall into the group that reviews these "graphic novels" solely because of or mostly because of the writing, I get why a couple of the reviewers were less than enamoured with the fact that three of the tales collected involved the "origin" of Man-bat.
Yeah, the storyline is zaney-Haney, but the artwork Aparo at his absolute best! The seemingly workman-like splash page that does a fantastic job of conveying the movement of the horse race. The second page with its great balance and use of chiaroscuro.
The page after that, when his work with just the upper left corner panel -- not to mention all of the beautiful artwork -- looks like the beginning of a painting. And so on, and so on. The rendering of Man-bat's transformation in the next page or so. The panel when Man-bat swoops down to save the "Rana Gigante" giant frog, or Batman in scuba gear from the ill-educated fisher-folk in "Santa Cruz". The high-altitude angle as Man-bat perches in a tree watching a voodoo rite dance.
The panels wherein the vampire bats chase and attack him. The look on the dead CIA agents faces. The various angles low, over the shoulders of the muscular Man-bat, etc. And, of course, the final panels during the denouement. Yes, Batman's appearance after the transformation doesn't make a lot of sense likely something Haney dreamed up but Aparo's artwork will make you believe!
And the cover for that issue: clllassssic! Crumb inspired art of Flint Henry Man-bat issues from '96, as well as showcase origin story to Steve Ditko and Neal Adams and there are even two covers, from the aborted Man-bat title of the s, by Jim Aparo, in which Man-bat never looked better.
A wide range of artists, all of them formidably talented. Nearly perfect! The Dixon stories were to my mind the finest in the collection.
Flint Henry's art is memorable and, frankly, disturbing. As others note, the anthology over-emphasizes Man-Bat's origins. That said, the Dixon stories make it worth a purchase, imo. He has a keen sense of the bitterness and irony in the material, and he does better than the rest at investigating what it's LIKE to be Man-Bat without any presto-chango potion to relieve him.
His three-parter includes a small but sympathetic role for Killer Croc. I haven't seen it mentioned in the other reviews, but in my copy several pages of the story "Wings" were in an incorrect order. Maybe I have a flawed early printing..? Also, the Neal Adams artwork is unfortunately some that he's retouched. It's hard to look at when you know what it was like before.
Who knew Man-Bat had so many solo comics? Unfortunately, the collection tells Man-Bat's origin 3 different times. The stories aren't nearly as good as the art. Sadly, Flint Henry draws almost half the book and his art makes everyone look like they are melting. See all reviews from the United States. A gifted scientist who was diagnosed with a rare condition that caused chronic deafness, Dr. Kirk Langstrom went to extreme lengths to develop a cure. After seemingly killing his wife, Francine Langstrom , Man-Bat embarked on a deadly rampage across Gotham City before he was captured and cured of his affliction by Batman.
Batman: Arkham Knight is filled with side-missions, one of which is the Creature Of The Night mission in which you must track down a man-bat that is a little bit bigger than Batman. This thing is terrifying, especially considering that the Creature Of The Night mission starts with a man-bat jump scare when you grapple to the top of a building after reaching Miagani Island. Now comes the fun part. You need to catch him.
Batman: Arkham Knight – Creature of the Night
In this mission you must track down the Man-Bat. The starting point can be found after first arriving in Miagani Island in the Main Story, where you will run into him after grappling off the top of a building. BATMAN: ARKHAM – MAN-BAT
Man-Bat Robert Kirkland "Kirk" Langstrom is a fictional supervillain and anti-hero appearing in comic books published by DC Comics , commonly as an adversary of the superhero Batman. The character has been featured in various media adaptations, such as feature films , television series and video games. Kirk Langstrom , a zoologist who specialized in the study of chiropterology , developed an extract intended to give humans a bat's sonar sense and tested the formula on himself. Later, Langstrom takes the concoction again and the Man-Bat returns. He also coaxes his wife, Francine Langstrom , into drinking the serum and she goes through the same transformation, becoming the She-Bat.

Halloween Manbat Easter Egg
Halloween comes early in Arkham Knight with this holiday-specific Easter egg, extending the story just slightly for one of Batman's most grotesque foes. Like Arkham City before it, the last game in the Rocksteady developed Batman action series features a time-based Easter egg, even without the involvement of the Calendar Man. To activate this one, you'll need to wait until Halloween night Kirk Langstrom. The Most Wanted mission begins while grappling along any of the tall buildings in Miagani Island early in the story.
