How to do Burning Man on a Shoestring Budget
I envisioned dusty, naked hippies taking large amounts of acid and driving around on giant art cars bumping electronic dance music. This helps us keep this site running and we are deeply grateful for your support!
We have had so many people ask us about what we packed for Burning Man we actually wrote a whole post about it…. Wait until Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to avoid the line to get in. Also, stock up on road sodas and adult diapers.
Rent a campervan. Reserve it well in advance as every type of large vehicle within several hundred miles of Black Rock City will be booked the week of Burning Man. The skydiving camp was right across from ours so we wandered over with some bloody mary fixings and hung out with them. They were super friendly and actually ran on a schedule and took us on an epic ride. Find their camp and follow in our footsteps!
Plus their skydiving outfits will provide you with endless entertainment. Choose one day for an early morning followed by a busy day and then relax in the evening.
And another day to save up your energy for a big night out. I think my mind, body, and spirit would have been much happier if we had arrived on Thursday and left late Sunday night or early Monday morning. Everything about this festival says FUN to me. And I am not really one to enjoy being dirty and without the running water. Is there a reason that they dont have catering?
And that you cannot purchase water? So if they sold food and water there it would just become any other old festival I guess. This was really entertaining to read. Yeah, his outfit was pretty amazing. We were lucky that he wore anything at all — apparently a lot of them prefer to be nakey, lol.
Love the way out costumes and vehicles! Still hesitant, but it looks incredible, and it sounds like you had such a memorable experience!
Thank you for sharing and your costumes really were fantastic!! Well thank you so much! First, you looked very cute! Second, no flippin way, nothing about this sounds exciting. I do love the art though…. Love the costumes, though, and the thought of freely giving to others there!
The tents and portapotties are also not my ideal way to spend a week. Burning Man is on the top of festivals I wanna go to! Yes, that comment was probably more for people living in the states. Your costumes were beautiful! I love them! I also love that you got creative and went up with skydivers to get those awesome views! Great tips! Your photos are brilliant by the way! I wanted to ask you two things: 1. I suffer with the heat quiet a bit. And so I need to always choose a cooler time to go or a way of keeping cool when I go on trips.
Or should I just pack light and bring precautions and tools to keep me cool? Thank you. Loved the read. Thank you so much for sharing this information about Burning Man. I am planning to attend in and I have been reading a lot about how to prepare and I found your article to be really helpful. I am sure I will be referring back to this article in the months to come.

The Beginner’s Guide to Burning Man
See those people relaxing in tranquil shade? Photo: Jesse Wagstaff. In , I spent quite a bit of time at the Black Rock City Library and there were people sleeping all over the floor. Other Burners just stepped right over them. You can also sleep on or around random art on the Playa, but I recommend getting your sleep in the City.
In order to understand why you need to such preparations, you first need to know how Burning Man works. The preparations explained here are based on the information shared in the other article. In terms of Burning Man preparations, our first order of business was to follow the dates for ticket sales. The tickets go on sale in multiple stages. They try to improve the ticketing system every year, so these stages may vary.
First Time at Burning Man? Learn from my Mistakes!
A year ago today, I arrived in Black Rock City, Nevada, for Burning Man, the annual festival devoted to radical self-reliance and self-expression. I decided to make the pilgrimage to better understand a world I had immersed myself in, downtown Las Vegas, where Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is investing a portion of his personal fortune into what he hopes will become a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem. There are streaks of Burning Man everywhere e. But getting to my destination proved to be more expensive and challenging than I ever anticipated. To claim my ticket, I met my seller at a luxury apartment building in downtown Las Vegas, where I was greeted by two somethings who presented the golden ticket while playing guitar and wearing rabbit ears. Windstorms are a normal occurrence, and in whiteout conditions, winds can reach around 70mph. Walking through the store aisles, I was simultaneously on the phone with the person who would be subleasing my New York apartment for the year. I finally sent a mass email out to some downtown Las Vegas residents, but no one responded.

One of the biggest misconceptions I often hear about Burning Man is that it costs thousands of dollars to attend. While it is totally possible to spend thousands of dollars on Burning Man, it is definitely not necessary. The first time I attended Burning Man I had recently started a new business i. I was broke , and I had to keep costs as low as possible. These things are:.
GUIDE: How to deal with cops at Burning Man
The Burning Man still stands. But one does not simply arrive in Black Rock City if that one is smart. Burning Man is outside and in an environment few people ever experience. Nearly 4, feet above sea level, the Black Rock Desert is a land of extremes.
Burning Man is an enigma. For beginner Burners, it may be overwhelming to hear about how the Burning Man festival is divided up into camps where you will decidedly spend your week camping and celebrating. And that you should make a decision of which camp you plan to join, prior to entering Black Rock City. With hundreds of camps to choose from, where do you even start? Camping at a typical festival, you will find thousands of campers and their tents strewn about a field with no rhyme or reason, except that you may be planted next to your mates.
What is Burning Man really like?
Taken as a whole, the city is equal parts culture, community and art, with plenty of rabbit holes to stumble into. Though never curated by the event organizers, even for the discerning music lover, "the playa provides". And when given the opportunity, participants are turned into active contributors to the character of a community. They become the fabric of what is possible. In other words, the producers and musicians that participate at Burning Man do so as a gift - never for pay.
Also, be sure that your credit card is ready for the purchase if the amount of several tickets is unusually high for your typical purchases. If you miss out on ticket sales, be sure to get involved in forums and the community to see if you can get your hands on a ticket. More info on buying tickets here.
